What Phil Robertson Taught Me About Manhood
I remember sitting down with Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty to talk about a book he had just written.
Two things from that conversation still stick with me:
A boy becomes a man when the whiskers on his face start to grow.
A man is never truly happy until he has a personal relationship with the one and only, Jesus Christ.
Are both of those true?
The first? Might be a little iffy.
I know plenty of men—strong, faithful, wise—who can’t grow a beard to save their life.
To be honest, I couldn’t for a long time either. Maybe that was Phil’s way of saying I wasn’t quite a man yet. 😆
But the second?
100% true.
History is full of men who looked like they had it all—wealth, fame, power—yet died miserable.
Because here’s the truth:
You can have everything this world offers… and still be empty without Christ.
But if you have Him, even with nothing else? You’ve got joy the world can’t touch.
It’s wild to think about Phil’s legacy.
Duck Dynasty ran for 11 seasons and over 130 episodes.
And in nearly every one, more than 60 million people heard one man pray.
That’s a happy man.
Rooted. Rugged. Redeemed.
I’m looking forward to seeing you again, Phil.
